The Altpörtal (old west tower, above) of the original 13th-century city walls survives to the present day. At 55m(180 feet), it is one of the highest medieval city towers built in Germany. The lower parts date from 1230, but the highest floors were added later and the Baroque roof in 1708. It is possible to climb the 154 stairs to the top for spectacular views of Speyer, the Rhine, and the surrounding countryside.
