Reichsburg Cochem is the principal sight in the town of Cochem. The castle towers over the town, overlooking estate vineyards and the old part of Cochem. It was built around AD 1000, but only a small part of the original keep has survived. It was then imperial property, or Reichsgut, until 1294, when the emperor pawned it to the bishop of Trier.
In 1689 the French destroyed the castle and the current Neo-Gothic building with ample towers and turrets was constructed in the late 19th century. The 40-minute guided tour in German (leaflets in English are available) is the only way to see the interior.
