Hildesheim's Dom (cathedral) dates to 872, but had major alterations between the 11th and 14th centuries. There was severe damage in 1945 but it was restored to its original condition. This is a prime example of Ottonian Romanesque style, with alternating pillars and columns. Although the interior retains much of the simplicity of the original, it does have some excellent art works. Particularly noteworthy are the Bernwardinischen Bronzegüsse (Bishop Bernward’s bronze doors, details shown above) dating from 1015. These large doors are now in the west front porch and illustrate biblical scenes. Also, note the large 11th-century chandelier over the transept crossing. At the east end is a rare, original two-storey Romanesque cloister. From here the legendary rose growing along the east apse can be seen. Inside the cloister is the small, but bright Early Gothic Annenkapelle (St Anne’s Chapel). The nearby Dom Museum, at Domhof 4, houses the cathedral treasure.

Opening hours are November to mid-March on weekdays, 10 am to 4 pm, Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. From mid-March to October, opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, noon to 5 pm.
