Built in 1912, the Negresco was classified as a National Historic Monument in 1974, and a National Historic Building in 2003. If you have seen the classic picture of Nice – the view of the Promenade des Anglais with its palm trees and flowers – then you have seen this hotel.
It’s one of the best-known Belle Époque hotels in the world. From the pink domes of its roof to its ruffly white façade, the hotel oozes extravagance. The current owner has filled its public rooms, several of which are extraordinary, with five centuries of French paintings and artwork – classical and historic paintings, royal portraits and 20th-century works by Salvador Dali and Nikki de Saint Phalle.
In keeping with Nice’s important place in the jazz scene, there’s a sensational portrait of Louis Armstrong. The rooms, which have been individually decorated in styles that range from Louis XIII to Art Deco, have the usual modern conveniences, carefully concealed among the fripperies and furbelows. Across the street, the hotel’s private beach includes rows of immaculate blue and white beach chairs and umbrellas. The few complaints we’ve heard were from people who prefered antiseptic modern perfection to regal character.
This is a grand dowager of a hotel. You can save 30 to 40% off the standard room price by booking through an online travel service. But, if you can’t stay, you can always visit one of the hotel’s two atmospheric bars – the English Bar and the Carousel Bar.
