Antibes-Juan les Pins claims to be the birthplace of that quintessential Riviera sport, waterskiing. According to the local story, Léo Roman and two brothers named Le Bihan experimented with the new-fangled activity off Juan les Pins, invented and named it in 1931. As usual with such claims, there are counter-claims and there’s a school of thought that says waterskiing was invented on a Minnesota lake in the 1920s. Regardless, they have been doing it here for a long time. Certainly it is where the sport was introduced to the Riviera; the first international waterskiing federation was founded here and the first world championships were held here in 1949. Naturally, it is something of a mecca for enthusiasts and good-quality lessons are available at half a dozen beaches. Nowadays, other boat-tow sports, like wake boarding and parascending, are available at the same beaches, clubs and hotels.
