If the distinctive limestone peaks of Mont Sainte Victoire look familiar, you have probably seen one of the more than a dozen versions of it painted by Paul Cézanne. One of the founders of Impressionism, the artist was born into a bourgeois Aix family in 1839 and studied law at the university there before going on to art school.
Although he occasionally lived and worked in Paris and elsewhere, he spent most of his life in Aix and there he built his reputation. Although he painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits, he was obsessed with the shape and bulk of the mountain and painted it again and again. In the Footsteps of Cézanne is a detailed self-guided pedestrian tour of the key sites associated with Cézanne.
Where he painted during the last years of his life, is open to the public and provides an insight into his methods as well as the objects and landscapes that inspired him. The Atelier is a few miles north of the Avignon Center, but is easily reached via a Number 1 Bus. The bus leaves every 20 minutes throughout the day from La Rotonde fountain, in front of the St Christophe Hotel, Avenue Victor Hugo.
Open Oct. 1 to March 31, everyday from 10 am to 12 noon and from 2 to 5 pm; an hour later from April 1 to June 30 and from September 1 to September 30. During July and August, the Atelier is open through the lunch hour and until 6 pm. Closed Christmas Day, New Years Day and May Day.
