The vast château park is open to the public, and includes traditional formal fountains and hedges closest to the château, with a series of six grand canals and forested islands emanating outwards like a fan. Beyond the canals is a vast lawn called the Tapis Vert, where locals picnic and walk their dogs. The Jardin Anglais to the west is more relaxed, with a picturesque landscape of winding rivers and two charming 18th-century follies: la Chaumière aux Coquillages (shell cottage) is intricately covered on the inside with thousands of tiny shells and mother of pearl, and la Laiterie de la Reine (the queen’s dairy), built for Marie Antoinette in the style of a classical temple, complete with marble statues and a man-made grotto. These are open daily (except Tuesday and during presidential visits) from 10am to noon and 2 to 5:30pm (until 3:30pm, October to March).
