Of course, the star of the town is the Château de Fontainebleau, home to 14 French sovereigns from François I to Napoleon III. Even when Louis XIV moved the court to Versailles, the royal family and the court would still return faithfully each year to Fontainebleau during the hunting season. Over the course of almost a millennium each king extended and changed certain aspects of the palace to suit the needs and the tastes of the time, prompting Napoleon to call it the Maison des Siècles, or House of Centuries. Although the château fell into disrepair during the Revolution, Napoleon restored many of the original furnishings and artworks, and transformed it into one of the most illustrious residences of the Empire. Unlike at many empty castles and palaces throughout the country, visitors to Fontainebleau can actually see the way the rooms appeared at the time of its royal use, including the king’s bathing room, and, sadly, a bed made for Marie Antoinette that she never had the chance to use. Fontainebleau also has the only remaining furnished Throne Room in France, built for the Emperor Napoleon, in the former royal bedchambers.
