The American Military Cemetery was donated to the United States by the city of Suresnes and inaugurated by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Located on seven acres on a hillside below the Fort du Mont Valérien (five miles west of Paris), the cemetery contains the graves of 1,541 American servicemen from WWI, as well as 24 unknown soldiers from WWII. Bronze tablets in the memorial chapel commemorate the 974 Americans lost at sea in 1917.
To get there by car, drive into Suresnes through the Bois de Boulogne, cross the Pont de Suresnes, turn right onto Avenue Charles de Gaulle, left onto Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, and left again onto Boulevard Washington (or just follow the signs for Cimetière Militaire Américain). To get there using public transportation, take the Transilien urban train from Gare St-Lazare to the Suresnes Mont Valerien station (then a 10-minute walk up the hill).
