As part of the Domaine de Chantilly, the Grandes Ecuries were donated to the Institut de France, and used for many years by the local riding academy. The respected riding master Yves Bienaimé began his equestrian career there in 1959, and was struck by both the stables’ splendor and its relative neglect. He returned to Chantilly with his wife Annabel two decades later and, after four years of negotiations with the Institut de France, opened the Musée Vivant du Cheval in 1982. The Bienaimé family completely renovated and restored the 18th-century stables without subsidies, creating a living museum that shares not only the magnificent setting and history, but also gives visitors an inside peek into the horse world. Visitors are not just entertained with magical horse riding shows, but also shown the training techniques used for the performance. There’s a series of exhibition rooms, each focusing on a different aspect of the equestrian world such as the role of horses in art and literature, the history of horse racing, or a collection of antique riding equipment. Half-hour performances take place in a compact circular arena under the grand Dôme at 4:15pm daily, with music, lights and costumes. There’s a children’s pony show in the morning and educational demonstrations (in French and English) three times a day with Q&Asessions afterward (call or check web site to confirm the seasonal schedule). All members of the Bienaimé family participate in every show. It’s hard not to notice how their passion and dedication really comes through in every aspect of the museum, making it a truly unique place to visit. Allow at least two hours if you plan on watching a performance.
