Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen since 1885, this is the largest flea market in the world (over 17 acres), divided into 13 specialized markets (some indoors) and over 2,000 individual dealers. The oldest is the Marché Vernaison, a real maze of surprises and bargains among the china, silverware, toys, furniture and clothing, with the lively Chez Louisette bistro hidden in the back. You can take the métro (M° Porte de Clignancourt), but you’ll have to walk through the temporary, crowded stalls of new junk and street entrepreneurs trying to sell authentic Rolex’s before getting to the real market on the other side of the elevated highway. It’s best to arrive by Bus 85 (from Luxembourg Gardens via the Louvre), which stops in the heart of the Puces at the Marché Paul Bert (except Sundays). where you can pick up a free map – highly recommended! Open Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 9:30am-6pm (don’t arrive too early, since most shops open slowly). Many shops are closed in August. The market has public toilets (at the Marché Jules-Valles), parking garages (not free), cash machines, international shipping companies, currency exchange bureaus, and plenty of cafés and snack bars.
