Hours: Open daily, from 7am in summer and 8am in winter until sunset (between 5:30pm and 9:30pm, depending on the season)

Free in winter and after 6pm in high season (April to October). Consider visiting after the château itself has closed to maximize your time. Ask for the free garden brochure/map at any information kiosk before going into the gardens to avoid getting lost or missing all the good stuff hidden in unlikely places. The main section is quite manicured, and features the famous fountains and hedges of Le Nôtre. Off to the sides, amid the more natural trees and wild gardens, are the grottos with impressive Greek mythological sculptures. Keep your ticket stub if you want to re-enter the gardens later in the day. There’s no entrance fee to the forested park surrounding the château gardens from the top of the Grand Canal. Here visitors can rent bicycles to explore the vast forest trails or row around the canal.
