The Château de Vincennes was an important royal residence from the 11th through 17th centuries, with the Bois de Vincennes reserved for the king’s hunts. When the court moved to Versailles, the Château de Vincennes became a prison and military fortress. Napoleon III turned the Bois into an English- style park and opened it to the public, but the State kept the château, adding an extra military fort to the grounds. Restoration of the 14th-century donjon (tower prison) and 16th-century Gothic chapel is ongoing, and won’t be finished until the end of 2006, and much of the interior is closed.
