Head up the hill to the imposing ruins of the Château de la Madeleine a towering fortress that has overlooked the Chevreuse Valley since the 11th century. It was modified several times over five hundred years by successive lords, and heavily fortified after falling into English hands during the Hundred Years’War. It was eventually abandoned in the 17th century by the Duc de Luynes, who moved into more comfortable quarters in the Château de Dampierre. The sisters of St-Cyr then occupied the château until the Revolution, when it eventually fell into ruin. Purchased by the Yvelines département in 1981, the Château de la Madeleine is currently undergoing extensive renovations, so only a small part of the interior is open to the public. But it’s worth the steep climb for the panoramic views. Stop by the Maison de la Parc offices inside the château to pick up maps and information about the regional park (ask for the English brochure if you don’t see it).
