Just across the Rue Lacépède are the Arènes de Lutèce. Built in the first century, this Roman amphitheater once accommodated up to 15,000 spectators (significantly smaller than the ones in Arles and Nîmes). Discovered during road construction in 1869, les Arènes escaped complete demolition thanks to persistent lobbying by Victor Hugo. Today it’s primarily used as a boules court, a kids’ soccer field, and a popular picnic spot.
