There are marked hiking trails, courtesy of the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre. crisscrossing France and neighboring European countries called the Grandes Randonnées (Grand Hikes), shortened to “GR” and the number of the trail (ie GR8). Three of these trails go right through Paris, using the same markers found on the forests trails (see below). Those who like a bit of a challenge can follow the markers from one end of Paris to the other (each one is approximately 12 miles long). One east-west trail goes from the Bois de Boulogne to the Bois de Vincennes via the Jardins du Luxembourg. The second east-west trail goes from Porte Maillot to the Porte Dorée via Montmartre and the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (lots of hills!). The north-south trail goes from Porte de la Villette to the Cité Universitaire via Notre Dame. For street-by-street directions pick up a map of the Traversée de Paris at the IGN Map Store.
