Most visitors come to San Vito for the Wilson Botanical Garden and Las Cruces Biological Station. Overlooking a mid-elevation forest, the Wilson Botanical Garden and its peaceful, secluded and magnificently landscaped setting remains a near-secret paradise. In 1961, Robert and Catherine Wilson, owners of a tropical plant nursery in Florida, settled here. With the help of Roberto Burle-Marx, a renowned Brazilian landscape designer, they created gentle paths through their 10 hectares/25 acres of colorful gardens. Visitors now stay in a modern lodge with spacious guest rooms and private baths. They eat healthful international cuisine with a special emphasis on fruits and veggies. Wilson is owned and operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies, who also run La Selva and Palo Verde Biological Stations.
