Eat at La Carreta Restaurant behind the cathedral; you can’t miss the signs. Billie and Tom Jaffe from Florida opened it in 1994 and their food is legendary. It has an unusual gift shop and a good menu. Dine on the shady porch where plastic bags, filled with water, hang from the rafters. Apparently, the sun’s rays refract in prisms that seem to keep away flies. Tom wrote us just before press time about his new eight-room La Carreta Bed & Breakfast , which sounds very good. Alternatively, stay cheap at the Hotel Naralit, across from the modernlooking cathedral. From Tilarán you may be able to see the Tenorio Volcano (no facilities) to the north, which looks like any other mountain.
