The most distinctive landmark in the BVI, The Baths resembles a disgruntled giant’s building blocks. Imagine the frustrated giant tossing the gigantic boulders into the air. They fell haphazardly on and near the sandy beach, some remaining erect, while others toppled against each other. Actually, the unique boulder formations (boulders are scattered throughout the island) were created by an ancient volcanic upheaval. Over millions of years the jagged granite blocks have weathered into the smooth boulders visible today. The boulders have fallen in such a way as to create grottos and seaside caves. Some have sunlight streaming through the cracks between rocks, others are open to bright sunlight, while others are eerily dark. Getting to The Baths is a lot of the fun. It is part of a string of beaches on Virgin Gorda’s southwest coast. It is only five minutes by car from Spanish Town (you can sail to the area and anchor offshore) and an easy 20-minute stroll. Look for the roadside parking area that is home to The Top of the Baths and Mad Dog’s eateries as well as a gift shop. Head to the adjacent path that leads downhill to the beach. Shaded, it winds 1,050 feet along a well-defined if rocky path. It takes about 15 minutes and you’ll be joined by lizards, birds and butterflies. The beach has lockers and a small beach shack selling cold drinks and hot dogs but no watersports rentals. Bring your own blanket and snorkeling gear.
