North of the State House, across Duke of York Street, are the Somers’ Gardens, Stop 7. This is where Sir George Somers’ heart and entrails were buried; his body was sent back to England. When Sir George finally arrived in Jamestown he found only 60 of the colonists still alive. The winter period of 1609-1610 in Jamestown’s history became known as the “Starving Time.” No sooner had Somers arrived than he took a ship back to Bermuda in search of food and supplies for the starving colony. This was to be his last voyage, he died shortly after arriving in Bermuda. The gardens, opened in 1920 by the Duke of Windsor,then the Prince of Wales, feature tropical flowers, shrubs and trees. Open daily from 8 am until 4 pm.
