Fort St. Catherine, Stop 16 on the map, is about two miles from the town of St. George on the extreme eastern tip of the island known as St. Catherine’s Point. If the walk is a little too much, you can jump on a bus. There should be one going by every 30 minutes or so. Built as part of the islands’ defensive system, the fort has been restored to its original state and contains underground chambers and tunnels carved deep into the bedrock, cannon, guns, a number of military exhibits, and replicas of the Crown Jewels. There are also interesting dioramas depicting the islands’ past and a video presentation that tells the history of Bermuda’s forts. The area surrounding the fort is popular for picnicking and recreation. The beaches are quiet and clean, and provide excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. The fort itself, with its massive walls, ramparts, and tiny nooks and crannies, is a photographer’s dream come true. It is open daily from 10 am until 4:30 pm. Admission is $5, children must be accompanied by an adult.
