Take a short drive from Bridgetown along the south coast and you’ll come to Long Beach. This beach, and hotel of the same name, although just minutes away, remains undiscovered by the majority of visitors to the island. The hotel, built in the 1950s, is somewhat past its prime but for the person who wants to get away from the crowds and traffic this is the ideal spot. Privately run, the rooms, although modest, feature balconies and a small kitchen, so after a trip to the supermarket you can lock yourself away and just spend time between your room, the swimming pool, the bar, and the beach. There is a swimming pool on the grounds and an open-air restaurant. The food is modest and the entertainment, such as it is, low key. Upstairs is a small library, stocked with an eclectic selection of books, left behind by previous visitors. The beach itself is aptly named, stretching away for miles, and usually deserted. It is one of the undiscovered gems in Barbados. The only way to reach the hotel is to drive or take a taxi, so if you plan to tour the island or even just visit the local bars and restaurants you will need to rent a car or take taxis wherever you go. The people who stay at Long Beach usually want to relax and unwind. If you want to party this is not the spot for you! But if you want to spend some time away from the rat race, read a few books, or maybe even write one, then this might just be the ideal location for you. But get there soon before someone decides this place should be demolished and a luxury Superclub should be built in its place.
