Originally called Trafalgar Square, with a statue of Lord Nelson erected in 1813, it predates the statue and square of the same name in London by 30 years. It was renamed National Heroes Square in 1999 to honor the national heroes of Barbados. The Cenotaph, comm e m o r a t i n g Barbadians killed in the twoWorldWars, was brought to Bridgetown on the SS Intaba in 1925. The names of the fallen from WW II were added in 1953. The fountain in the square was built to commemorate the first running water piped in from Benn’s Spring.
