this is a 100-acre nature reserve where you can spend an interesting hour or two learning about Grand Bahama’s flora and fauna. If you enjoy bird watching, this is the place for you. More than 40 species of birds, including turkey vultures, hairy woodpeckers, Bahama yellowthroats, indigo buntings, American redstarts, Greater Antillean pewees, and American red-tailed hawks, inhabit the park. Take a guided tour of the facility, the only way to see and really understand its scope, and you’ll be introduced to many of the smaller birds as they fly in for a tidbit casually tossed into the air by your guide; it’s very entertaining.
The tour will take you on a pleasant walk along the 2,000-foot nature trail that meanders back and forth among the flowering plants, orchids, poinsettias, periwinkles, hibiscus, impatiens, morning glories and more, to a freshwater pond at the end. There, a flock of West Indian flamingos will rush to meet you, ready for their treat – a morsel of dog food, which they’ll devour with great relish. You may also see butterflies, blue-tailed lizards, tree frogs and curly tailed lizards.
