This is the oldest of the island’s three forts. It was built in 1741 to defend the island from attack by Spanish invaders and faces the eastern end of the harbor. It, too, never saw a shot fired in anger. The little fort, barely large enough to justify the title, is always open to the public, day or night. You simply walk in, climb the stone stairs to the upper floor and look out over the harbor, much as its garrison must have done 250 years ago. While you’re there, take a walk in the nearby park. No admission charge. Open seven days. No phone.
