Racing became popular when fishermen challenged each other on their way home with the day’s catch, and villagers gathered to see who would arrive first. As gum trees became hard to find because of over-harvesting, the men began to build their boats from different types of wood. Eventually, they made other changes in an attempt to create a better and faster boat. Thus, the yole ronde was born. A yole has two brightlycolored square sails and is steered with a heavy paddle that requires the strength of three men to move, while the gommier has only one sail and is steered with a rudder.
