Burgos Travel Guide

Introduction

Burgos, the capital of the Burgos region in northern Spain, is the home of El Cid, Spain's greatest legend. And why wouldn't it be? Here is a lovely Gothic city, which for 500 years was the capital of Christian Spain. It is filled with fabulous old buildings and dominated by one of Spain's most astonishing cathedrals, a Gothic masterpiece that was begun in the early 13th century and took three centuries to complete. The Burgos Cathedral is actually the pièce de résistance of Burgos, its triumphal towers easily distinguishable from virtually every vantage point in the city. The cathedral has in it, besides, the tombs of El Cid and his wife Doña Jimenez.

Location

Burgos is situated on the river Arlanzón in northern Spain, a little way to the west of Logroño and southwest of Bilbao.

How to Get There

Burgos is relatively easy to reach, with direct flights to and from Barcelona and, in summer, even Paris, France.

Sightseeing

Burgos' principal attraction is of course its cathedral. Its other big draw is the Museum of Human Evolution, one of Spain's most visited museums, which showcases the remains of Europe's earliest known inhabitants that were found in the region fairly recently (see Atapuerca). Among the historical attractions of Burgos, apart from its monumental Gothic cathedral, are several ancient churches and convents, including the remarkable 12th-century Monasterio de las Huelgas, and an atmospheric historic town center.
