Arles Travel Guide

Introduction

Arles is where Vincent Van Gogh lived and worked and produced an astonishing 300-plus paintings between 1888 and 1889. This is also where he cut off his ear and was hospitalized at the 16th-century Hotel-Dieu, now the Espace Van Gogh, where he painted the galleried garden which can still be visited. But besides its associations to Van Gogh, Arles comes into its own as one of the prettiest cities in southern France, a joy to discover by just wandering about. It has its fair share of ancient monuments, many of them UNESCO World Heritage sites, and several good museums and atmospheric streets and squares lined with shops and cafés. The city also, one might add, is the de facto "Gateway to the Camargue," for it takes in the sweep of land within the two branches of the Rhône, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the Camargue – roughly 170,000 acres! – even though most of its relatively small population is concentrated in an equally small area. Still, with its vast expanse of real estate, Arles can fairly be touted as territorially the largest town in France!

Location

Arles is situated on the Rhône in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in Provence in southern France.
