Limburg, or Limburg an der Lahn, is an absolute gem of a town, with one of the most architecturally harmonious medieval old town centers in Germany. It has some of the most impressive half-timbered buildings in the land, unscathed during the war and now housing restaurants, cafés, and fine art and antique shops. The town also has in it one of the "Great Cathedrals of Germany," Sankt Georgs Dom, which is actually Limburg's principal attraction and easily the most impressive building in the Lahn Valley. The cathedral dates from 1235 and has a Late Romanesque exterior and Early-Gothic-cum-Baroque interior, rising in a flourish of seven triumphant towers to dwarf the entire town. There is, besides, an historic and famous stone bridge here as well, across the river Lahn, dating from 1354, which once enhanced the town's importance on the Rhine trade route.

Limburg is situated in the western part of the German state of Hesse, some 47 miles (76 km) northwest of Frankfurt, or 74 miles (119 km) southeast of Cologne. It has a population of nearly 34,000.
