Antwerp Travel Guide

Introduction

Antwerp, Antwerpen in Dutch, is the premier Flemish city of Belgium. It is a city of diamond cutters and diamond traders, and an international center of the diamond trade; and of fashion designers and fashion houses, home to the "Antwerp Six" – a group of avant garde designers from the city's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, who took the London runways by storm in 1986 to establish Antwerp as one of the leading fashion cities of the world. It is also a city of Flemish masters, the likes of 16th-century Baroque painters Rubens and Van Dyck, whose works can be seen at the city's museums and galleries and on panels of some of the old churches and cathedrals. And there's more: There are guildhalls and other impressive old buildings lining the city's squares, scores of statues of the Virgin Mary gracing street corners, gallons upon gallons of locally-crafted amber ales being poured at brew pubs all across the city, and cafés where you can sip locally-roasted coffee and nibble on those delectable Antwerpse Handjes – locally-made almonds-and-milk-chocolate biscuits. Indeed, here is a city imbued with history and culture that can fairly give Brussels, the capital city, a run for its money.

Location

Antwerp is located in the northern part of Belgium, directly north of Brussels, near the border of the Netherlands.
