Mérida Travel Guide

Introduction

Mérida is a veritable archaeological treasure trove. It has Roman monuments coming out of its ears. In fact, the ruins found here constitute what is considered to be one of the most comprehensive and best-preserved such collections in Spain, and a superb example of the power and prosperity enjoyed by the Romans for more than half a century. There are temples, aqueducts, palaces and forums from the Roman era, and architectural glories from civilizations that followed, those of the Visigoths, Moors and Christians. In sum, Mérida can accurately be described as a living museum, and it is no wonder that the entire "Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If time is limited, skip the churches and hit the Roman digs that date from 50 BC onward and offer up a feast of sorts.

Location

Mérida, capital of the Extremadura province in the southwest part of Spain, is situated on the Guadiana River, approximately 117 miles (188 km) north of Seville, or 213 miles (344 km) southwest of Madrid.
