Agra Fort
The Agra Fort occupies a special place in Indian history. It was first mentioned in records dating as far back as 1080 AD when it was held by the Chauhan dynasty of the Rajputs. Then came the Lodis: Sikander Lodi, the first sultan of Delhi, in fact moved his center of governance to Agra, thus making it the defacto capital during his reign from 1487 to 1517; and after his death, his son, Ibrahim Lodi remained there for another nine years until his monumental defeat and death at Panipat in 1526. Subsequently, it became the seat of the Mughal empire under the emperors Barbur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.
A characteristically picturesque fort, the Agra Fort was originally built from red bricks, and, like its counterpart in Delhi, it was dubbed Lal Qila, or Red Fort. There are four gates leading into the fort, the best known and grandest of them all the Delhi Gate. Within the fort lie several other places of interest, among them the 85-acre Anguri Bagh, Diwan-i-Khas, Mina Masjid, Moti Masjid, Sheesh Mahal and others. The Agra Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage SIte.
