Kurpark

Kurpark

A block down from the modern 1980s Kurhaus is the 114-acre Kurpark. It is filled with art – ranging from temporary modern art to statues of famous literary figures, including Dostoievsky. Seven of the hot springs that made Bad Homburg famous are inside the Kurpark. Water from the Victoria fountain tastes like liquid metal. The tennis club inside the park is the oldest on the European continent.

The late 19th-century Kaiser Wilhelms Bad is a grandiose sandstone and brick building typical of the period.

Nearby is the Spielbank (Casino), Im Kurpark. It was designed by the Blanc brothers in 1841. They later also designed the Casino in Monte Carlo, making the move there easier for the gambling jet set after the Prussians stopped legal gambling in Germany in 1872.

Foreign aristocracy also took to the waters in Bad Homburg and left their mark in the park. King Chulanlongkorn of Siam donated the Thai-Sala in 1907, with golden carvings and other rich decorations in appreciation for his cure. The czar laid the foundation stone for the small Russian church with typical onion domes as a place of prayer for Russian visitors to the spa. It is still used by the Russian community and the interior can only be seen on a guided tour of the Kurpark.
