Cabbages & Condoms Yep, that’s the name of the restaurant; it’s part of a chain that is growing rapidly and now has two resorts with the same name. The operations are run by the Thai Population and Community Development Association (PDA) whose founder selected the name, saying that birth control should be as cheap in Thailand as its vegetables. The vast array of high-quality Thai dishes has been adapted for Western palates.
The food, service and prices are all excellent if you can handle the décor, which is, not surprisingly, displays of the world’s different condoms. It claims to be the world’s largest collection, which nobody would dispute. They’re displayed on the walls, and the carpet up the stairs has cartoons about condoms woven into it. In keeping with the birth-control theme, drinks are available at the Vasectomy Bar, and those things that are offered after you’ve dined aren’t after-dinner mints.
To raise funds for its projects, the PDA operates a handicraft shop jointly with Oxfam, which sells carved wooden figurines and woven silk items all made in Northeastern Thai villages. The other C&C restaurants are in Chiang Rai, Korat and Nang Rong. The resorts are in Pattaya and Saptai.
