Vittorio Emanuele III (recently closed to tourists for safety reasons), consists of tunnels beneath the mountain summit planned by Colonel Gavotti duringWorldWar I to strengthen the troops’ ability to defend Grappa (these took 10 months to complete and are nearly five km long). The main tunnel’s many branches have artillery posts and observatories. Also here is the Caserma Milano, military barracks used by soldiers during the war, that now houses a museum. It contains weapons, photos and other artifacts from World War I as well as a video about Monte Grappa’s role in the Great War.
