The city’s most important religious building, this Romanesque structure was erected on the remains of a previous building, destroyed by Barbarossa in 1155. You can see the ruins of the earlier church in the carved stone along the entrance and in the crypt under the Cappella delle Reliquie (Relic Chapel). The current cathedral replaced it in 1175, but wasn’t completed until around 1227 when the mosaic showing Christ between Madonna and St John the Baptist by Solsternus and the two upper rose windows were completed on the façade. The central rose window, in the final tier, depicts the four evangelists in its square frame, and is considered one of the most ornate in Umbria.
