There’s plenty to be enjoyed in the immediate vicinity of town, and three hearty walks or cycle trips will bring you to four churches all too often missed on the typical Spoletino sightseeing route. The first, Chiesa di San Ponziano lies across the Tessino River to the northeast of town. It was built to honor the Spoletino martyr St Ponziano, who later became patron saint of the city, and it boasts a fine portal enriched with sculptured motifs, high reliefs and dramatic rose windows not unlike those of the cathedral. Inside, the walls are decorated with 14th- and 15th-century frescoes, but little else from the original construction remains after drastic remodeling in 1788.
