The gateway into town takes you onto Piazza Garibaldi and into the courtyard of Chiesa di San Gregorio Maggiore which, although much renovated, was originally built in the 11th and 12th centuries to honor the Spoletino martyr from which it takes its name. The Cappella degli Innocenti, decorated with frescoes by Angelucci da Mevale, was added in the 14th century following the discovery of bones believed to belong to the saint, while the sturdy bell tower, constructed out of recycled Roman building materials, had already been added a century earlier. The church façade is preceded by a Renaissance portico with three barrel-vaults, which was added to the original construction in the 16th century (one of the few items to come through later 20th-century restorations unscathed).
In its lower part are three mullioned windows and two niches containing statues of St Gregory and St Barattale. The interior has done the best job of preserving its original Romanesque look and feel with three aisles and a raised presbytery with crypt below. Look for the interesting Romanesque fresco cycle decorating the central nave.
