The Spanish coat of arms that decorates the town’s entrance gates remind us that this was the capital of a Spanish State, which, from 1557, extended inland to Capalbio and Talamone until absorbed back by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1808. This Spanish rule (thanks to their alliance with the Medici) heralded the town’s period of greatest splendor, which saw the construction of such buildings as the Polveriera Guzman.
