Inside the five even arches that support its ground floor, the palace opens out onto an elegant courtyard, which links onto the Sala Maggiore (with a frescoed Virgin from the Giotto school); the Centro di Documentazione Michelucci (dedicated to one of Italy’s most important of architects); and its main attraction, the Museo Civico. The latter occupies the top floor with a collection of paintings, ceramics, porcelain and glasswork that covers the whole of Pistoia’s artistic history from the Romanesque Pala di San Francesco (13th century) to the city’s great 15th-century altarpieces, alongside works by Lorenzo di Credi, Ghirlandaio and Gerino Gerini.
