This imposing albarese-stone castle, Castello dell’Imperatore (Emperor's Castle), is empty but for July and August when it becomes an atmospheric open-air cinema during Prato’s summer festivities (0574-37150, 1 July-31 Aug, from 9 pm, €5, conc. €4, Italian showings only). Although heavily reconstructed, it originally sprung up in 1239 when Swabian Emperor Frederick II nominated Prato as the best spot for his imperial base. The result is the only example of Swabian architecture in Northern Italy (watch for the lions sculpted over the entrance). The Florentines later modified it in the mid-14th century when they established a garrison here after buying title to the town from its former Neapolitan rulers.
