The adjoining former monastic residence is now the Tihany Museum. It covers the history of the region from the Iron Age onward. Óvár Hill, 660 feet high, adjoins Tihany, with a walking trail leading up to it (check with Tourinform, as they are re-marking the trails here). This is the site of the oldest and best preserved Iron Age earthworks in Hungary. Three concentric mounds, built up and then set with a single gateway, are clearly evident.
The defensive perimeter was so successful that the Romans later used the same works to defend their camp. On the same hill facing the lake, caves served as homes for the Benedictine monks in the early medieval period. History holds that they did not come from Rome, but from Kiev, and formed the unique St. Nicholas Hermitage of Oroszkõ.
