The highest restaurant within stone’s throw of the Danube is the most historic, at the top of Gellert Hill. The famous Citadel harbors the Citadella Restaurant, about 20 yards down from the main gate entrance and up the stairs to the side entrance door. It encapsulates Hungarian atmosphere, rough elegance, and history. There are numerous rooms, some bearing boar skins and trophies on the walls, others with turn-of-the-century guns and swords. Then, there are the knights’ dining areas. The coat of arms of St. Mattias is draped across the ceiling, and knights’ regalia and coats of arms decorate the walls. Spears, swords, pikes and axes from long ago are mounted against the blocks of Hapsburg granite carved by masons from a more romantic period. Examples of Hungarian horsemen’s riding gear and various Magyar smoker’s pipes and drinking flasks from the puszta, the wild flatlands of Hungary, are mounted in some corners. Count on being served Hungarian… and that goes for the wines as well, with a fine selection from every corner of Hungary. There is a nightly Hungarian gypsy band and the view over Budapest is breathtaking.
