This aging structure has hosted prime ministers and several presidents of the United States. Built in 1918 at the foot of Gellért Hill and restored in 1973, although some rooms are being updated, on the whole they are small and filled with older furniture. So, why list it? In its time this was considered one of the Grand Hotels of Europe, and it has hosted virtually every dignitary that has ever visited Hungary. The Art Nouveau interior of the lobby and main dining areas is spectacular.
The staff is reasonably helpful and internationally seasoned. The Gellért baths, Rococo marble swimming pools framed in tall, rose marble Roman columns soaring to support glass cathedral ceilings, are really special. For this alone you may find the Gellért worth it, although you can enter the baths for a fee without being a hotel guest. The restaurant is first-class (perhaps a legacy of the famous chef Gundel, who once worked his culinary magic from the Gellert kitchen).
Behind the hotel are the many scenic pathways of Gellért Hill. Cross the square in front of the hotel and the Danube shore invites; cross it to the Nagycsarnok, the city market at Váci utca, or access the Belvaros by bus or tram, or stroll the Danube shoreline.
