Arriving at Egyetem tér, the Neo-Baroque Law and Political Science Faculties of the University stand out in the square. Open for a look-see, it is but the introduction for what lies behind the building. Around the corner is the University Church. This church symbolizes another aspect of Budapest history, also remembered in the cathedral cave at Gellert Hill. The counter-reformation is symbolized in a Baroque church built by the Hungarian-born Pauline order.
Its extraordinary interior is a contrast of colors and marble, balanced with wood pulpits, pews, and doors that were the work of the monks themselves. The Paulines were founded in Hungary in the 13th century, and constructed their first house of worship in a country town. Their inheritance of the relics of St. Paul, acquired by King Lajos the Great (1342-82), helped to define the order. Turks demolished their small church in the country during the occupation.
They say revenge is sweet. After the Turks were driven out, the Paulines demolished the former mosque and built another church in its place. (It is no wonder that the chancel does not face eastward!). It was consecrated in 1742. The Paulines did not continue undisturbed. In 1786 Emperor Joseph II abolished the order, which is linked to the construction of the church in the cave at the side of Gellert Hill. It is today, however, a functioning order of the Catholic Church.
