From Lechner we enter the world of the church and Hungary’s medieval history. From Szabadság út go to Bank út, and walk one short block east to Hercegprimás út, make a right and walk to St. Stephen tér and the imposing St. Stephen’s Basilica. Three generations of architects spent a good portion of their energies on this marvelous structure. It was started in 1851 by the aging József Jild.
He died in 1886, after which the famous Miklós Ybl took on the work. Ybl was not to see its completion. He died in 1891, to be succeeded by Jozsef Kauser, who completed it in 1906, over half a century from when the first foundation stones were laid. The white statue of King István I stands resolute behind the altar.
Asmall chapel in the back holds a gold and glass casket ornamented in fine jewels, home of the Holy Dexter, the actual preserved right hand of St. István, clenched in a fist. Befitting its sacred character, the hand has been shuffled back and forth in the former crown lands since it first was severed from King István’s arm in 1038. It was canonized in 1083.
Don't leave the Basilica until you have gone up to its cupola, which is accessible by elevator and stairs. Its 360° view of Budapest from a height of 65 m/195 feet will provide lifetime camera shots. Basilica tours, in English and Hungarian, cost 1,600 HUF at this writing.
