Sitting inside a replica of the Greek Parthenon is one of the finest art collections in Europe with a catalogue of works by Rafael, Rembrandt a fine Spanish Collection, including several marvelous El Grecos and Goyas, Italian works by Giorgione, Bassano, and Corregio. Other aintings and sculpture date from the fourth century through the 18th century. German and Flemish works include a Dürer portrait and Bruegel’s characteristic human situational portraits.
At the museum entrance are a group of powerful statues and busts by Rodin. In the back, one of the finest graphics collections in the world (over 10,000 drawings and 100,000 etchings) includes work by Da Vinci, Dürer, Cezanne, and Manet. This section is not always open, as many of these works are sensitive to light. The Egyptian gallery is not to be missed, and includes thousands of works of Egyptian art, including ancient coffins.
