The Citadel is an imposing fortress, visible from the entire waterfront of the Danube at City Center, built between 1850 and 1854 by the Hapsburgs to keep Budapest under heel after the War of Independence. The city bought the fortress from Austria in 1899, after the Austrian troops had left.
The walls were symbolically destroyed, but partially rebuilt to house Hungarian and German troops in WWII. Today, inside the Citadel, you can tour the remains of a German bunker below ground that housed the German air command during WWII, complete with wax figures and a WWII battle film. It’s not spectacular, and is cheesy in parts, but interesting for its neutral treatment of the German army as well as its favoritism toward the Hungarian soldiers.
Young Hungarian freedom fighters made their last stand against the Russians here in 1956. Bomb blast scars and bullet holes are still there. Various examples of artillery pieces are on display. We earlier noted the fine Citadel restaurant and the unrated hotel that occupy the structure. There is also an outside büfé.
