For drivers, Lorsch makes an interesting stop before joining the A67 or A5 back to Mainz or Frankfurt. Its Königshalle is the oldest complete monument in Germany. Constructed in 767 during the reign of Charlemagne, as part of the Monastery at Lorsch, its exact purpose remains unclear. However, the elaborate Franco-Merovingian outside decorations are considered some of the best examples of Carolingian architecture in Germany. Inside, some of the original wall paintings can still be seen. The roof is a late Renaissance, early Baroque addition. Currently the inside can only be seen on a guided tour, which is in German at irregular intervals–for exact times.
