Walk east along the Rue du Général de Gaulle to the Palais du Roi de Rome (on the Place du Roi de Rome). This once-grand palace was built by Napoleon in 1812 (significantly modifying the existing 18th-century mansion) for his son, the King of Rome. The young king, known as l’Aiglon (the Little Eagle), only spent a short time in the palace before his exile to Austria with his mother, Marie-Louise. The main part of the building no longer exists, and what remains has been split into two wings by the courtyard. The Rambouillet town council purchased one of the wings in 1989, and uses it today to host free temporary exhibitions. Don’t miss the romantic garden hidden around the back.
